SEO cost and local search visibility for Kanpur businesses

A trader in Naveen Market asked three agencies what SEO costs in Kanpur. One quoted ₹3,000 a month, one quoted ₹18,000, and one asked ₹60,000 for a six-month campaign with a “ranking guarantee”. All three sent the same four-page proposal template.

None of those numbers is really a price for SEO in Kanpur. Each one is a price for a different amount of someone’s time, and the cheapest is a price for a spreadsheet.

What SEO costs in Kanpur in 2026

The clearest benchmark comes from GoodFirms, which surveyed more than 300 SEO agencies worldwide through April and May 2026. Its findings put the typical retainer around ₹1.3 lakh to ₹4.2 lakh a month, and 43.3% of agencies charge under ₹1.3 lakh, mostly serving small local businesses. The survey’s South Asia band is far lower, about ₹42,000 to ₹1,70,000 (GoodFirms, 2026).

Indian price lists sit well under that, which tells you something about the work being sold rather than the market’s generosity. Quotes land anywhere from ₹5,000 to ₹2,00,000 a month, and the ones at the bottom are usually a single person running a template across forty clients.

Ours starts at ₹2,000 a month for technical work: crawl fixes, structured data, Core Web Vitals, sitemaps, on-page mapping (SEO services in Kanpur). That is a deliberately small scope, and we say no to it when a site does not need it yet.

The same survey found 54.3% of agencies raised prices in 2025 or 2026, and 37% of those named AI search optimisation as the reason, usually billed separately at around ₹75,000 a month. Some of that work is real. A lot of it is the same old audit with a new noun in the deck.

A retainer is hours, so ask what the hours are

₹3,000 a month buys about four hours of a junior’s time in a tier-two Indian city, before tools, calls and reporting. Four hours a month is enough to change some titles and file one report. It will not fix a site that takes six seconds to load on a phone.

So the arithmetic to run before you sign is simple. Take the monthly fee, divide it by the provider’s hourly rate, and see how many hours land on your site each month. Then ask what those hours will be spent on. A vendor who cannot name the tasks is selling the invoice, not the work.

There is a second number worth checking, and almost nobody asks it: how many other clients is the person assigned to your account carrying? Senior work spread across sixty accounts at ₹3,000 a month turns into a queue.

For a shop in Swaroop Nagar or Civil Lines, most enquiries do not start with a blue link at position six. They start with a map result, a phone call, or a WhatsApp message from a listing someone found in the local pack.

That changes what you should buy, and it is why an SEO company in Kanpur pitching a content retainer to a sweets shop is answering a question nobody asked. A Google Business Profile with correct categories, opening hours, photos of the actual shop and a handful of genuine reviews will move more enquiries in a month than a ₹15,000 content retainer will move in six. It costs nothing to claim and nothing to keep accurate.

Google is blunt about the free part. Its own guidance says appearing in Search costs no money, no matter what anyone tells you, and that the core of ranking is helpful, people-first content with the words people actually search on the page (Google Search Essentials).

For a Kanpur leather or textile exporter, the picture inverts. Buyers search from Delhi, Tirupur and Dubai, they compare catalogues, and they rarely use the map. That business needs a fast catalogue site with real product photography and structured data, and the SEO follows the site rather than replacing it.

The fixes that cost nothing

Start with what a developer would check in an afternoon, because in most small Kanpur sites these are still broken.

  • The phone number is an image, so nobody can tap it.
  • The title tag says “Home” on every page.
  • The site takes five seconds to show anything on a mid-range Android.
  • The Google Business Profile and the site give different opening hours.
  • Every product image is a 3 MB PNG uploaded straight from the camera.

None of that needs a strategy document. It needs someone to open the site on a phone and write down what is wrong.

When SEO is the wrong first purchase

This is where most Kanpur quotes go wrong, and where we lose deals on purpose.

If your business has no site, or a two-page placeholder from 2019, buying SEO is paying a monthly fee to optimise nothing. A ₹8,999 four-page catalogue with a WhatsApp button and a maps embed will out-earn a ₹5,000 retainer against a site that has nothing on it. Fix the asset, then optimise it.

If you sell thirty pieces a month over WhatsApp, the same applies. The retainer is a recurring cost against a channel that already works. Our advice in that case is to skip us for a year.

If you are competing for “website designing company in Kanpur” against a dozen established studios, that is a different fight, and it needs content, internal links and time rather than a single month’s fee. Expect the first signals at month two and something worth measuring at month four to six, which is the timeline most agencies report for local service work.

What to ask before you sign anything

  1. What exactly happens in month one, task by task?
  2. How many hours does my fee buy, and who does them?
  3. Which pages will you change, and can I see them before they go live?
  4. Who owns Search Console and Analytics after the contract ends?
  5. What do you do about AI answers, and which tools show the result?
  6. Which of my competitors are you measuring me against?
  7. What would make you tell me to stop paying?

A vendor who answers all seven in plain language is worth a test month. A vendor who promises position one is telling you what you want to hear, and the invoice will arrive monthly either way.
